Who are the Chelsea Pensioners? |
The two men in red coats in the picture above are Chelsea Pensioners. You may come across these elderly men in distinctive scarlet uniform wandering around London...they are are carrying on 300 years of tradition.
Beginning in the reign of King Charles II, pensions were made available to all former soldiers who had been injured in service, or who had served for more than 20 years. These soldiers could then use their pension in exchange for board, lodging, clothing and full medical care at the Royal Hospital.
