If you wander behind the Duke of York Square down Cheltenham Terrace the Royal Hospital Road opens up to present the Royal Hospital Chelsea. It is so stunning you might drop your groceries! |
It is a Christopher Wren masterpiece built from 1682-1692. Intended by Charles II as a home for wounded soldiers, hundreds of years latter it still cares for Britain’s war veterans. The Men in the Scarlet wander through Chelsea in their scarlet coats. Stop and speak. The Chelsea Pensioners love to “chat you up”!
The Royal Hospital has beautiful grounds well worth strolling. They are open daily except in May when the Royal Horticultural Society hosts the annual Chelsea Flower Show on the grounds. Also stop to see the Chapel, Great Hall, the Museum and State Apartments. All are open o the public
